Case Study: Housewares
The Challenge
Large global supplier of value-based furniture and home goods approached Material ConneXion with a desire to incorporate circular economy into their everyday lines.
The brand needed to improve the recyclability of floor lamps that are typically weighed down using low-cost poured cement bricks. These bricks go inside the base of the lamp and are typically covered with a metal or plastic shell. Though inexpensive, once made they are unrecyclable and contribute to landfill waste.
Key Requirements
- Circular Economy
- Cost Effectiveness
- Ease of Implementation
The Discovery
As a method of controlling waste in metalworking plants, scrap is typically pressed together into a ‘puck’, which makes the swarf, off-cuttings, and excess metal more compact and easier to handle.
The Material Solution
The furniture company now incorporates metalworking pucks as a base weight in their lamp designs, reducing waste and allowing them to be recycled — promoting a more circular economy model.
